Iceland Itinerary for Sir Jonathan North Community College 2014

“Living on the Edge of an Extreme Environment”

Day 1 Wednesday 9 July “Arrival and Blue Lagoon”
• Leave college at 6.30am and drive to Gatwick airport
• Depart WOW Air flight X9202 at 12.15 from Gatwick arriving at Keflavik 14.25
• To Blue lagoon for refreshing dip plus steam rooms and sauna
• To accommodation in Garður and welcome snack
• Back to Guest house at Garður and evening meal

Day 2 Thursday 10 July “Tectonics: Fire and Geothermal Day”
• Depart for Reykjanes peninsular, stopping first at small hamlet of Hafnir
• Major rift where two continents are dividing (called the ‘Land Bridge’)
• Explosion craters along the rifts – walk up to craters
• Using geo-thermal energy: visit to geo-thermal Power Station
• Hot mud pots and steam vents at Gunnuhver
• Erosional coastal processes at Brimkatlar and Selatungr, the circle of lava eruptions
• Krýsuvík hot sinter pools and geo-thermal activity
• Pillow lavas formed at the constructive margin
• Back to Guest house at Garður for evening meal
• Optional swimming in local pool

Day 3 Friday 11 July “Ice, Waterfalls and Coast Day”
• Depart early
• Sólheimajökull glacier – close up of crevasses, snout, wasting ice, moraine and under ice streams
• Glacier walking with activity company http://www.adrenalin.is
• See the Eyjafjallajökull volcano that erupted in 2010 (from a distance)
• Skógarfoss (awesome 60 m waterfall)
• Seljandafoss (waterfall you can get behind)
• Coastal features near Dyrhólaey: amazing basaltic columns similar to Giants causeway plus erosional coastal features
• Stay at Hotel Hvolsvöllur in South Iceland

Day 4 Saturday 12 July “The Golden Circle”
• Gullfoss – awesome fault-guided waterfall and walk beside its gorge
• Geysir – where Strokkur erupts every few minutes up to 20-40m high
• Þingvellir National Park – rifting between American & Eurasian plates
• To Reykjavik for city tour: The Perlan and Hallgrimskirkja for amazing views over the city
• To Garðskagi Museum for evening meal with views over rugged coast & original lighthouse
• Back to Guesthouse in Gardar

Day 5 Sunday 13 July “Vikings and Fish Day”
• Vikings discovering North America: replica of ship that went there in 1000AD in the Viking World museum
• Fresh fish and chips lunch in fishing port of Grindavik
• Depart from Keflavik airport on flight X9205 at 15.35 flight arrives Gatwick at 19.40
• Coach from Gatwick airport to college. Arrive at approximately 11.30pm.
